Controlled Power System Separation Using Generator PMU Data and System Kinetic Energy

With the growing number of severe system disturbances and blackouts around world, controlled separation is becoming an increasingly important integrity protection scheme (SIPS) to save electric power from a complete or partial disintegration. A successful splitting approach should at least tackle following two well-known interrelated problems: “when split?” “where split?”. Multiple previous publications consider these problems separately, even those pursuing combined propose solutions with limited applicability. In this paper, we are proposing novel PMU-based detector loss synchronism that utilizes generator PMU data promptly detect rotor angle instabilities over wide area. Moreover, showing how our detection principle can be coupled known techniques form integrated defense against unintentional synchronism. The performance wide-area SIPS demonstrated on IEEE 39-bus test for various types unstable conditions.
